There were many great ideas posted this week about some of the "real issues" that we should be addressing at Eastern, including:
- better food at lunch
- more interesting classroom experiences - teachers improve their instruction
- better equipped classrooms (basic supplies, books and upgraded furniture)
- motivating students to achieve their full potential, get good grades and graduate on time!
- doing more to help the students who do come and do care
and, of course, Making AYP!
Please write an idea or two that you think we should use to make sure we get 95% of our Juniors to take the MME all three days this March.
I think you should make it a must to graduate -kani flake
ReplyDeleteWe should give the Juniors some sort of incentive. I don't know what, but something.
ReplyDelete~~Obada Ejoh
I think that students might want to come to take the MME if there was some sort of incentive, other than being able to take it for free.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what we should do. But I know the administration at this school needs to be friendlier, and more involved in the issues the students are concerned with. I think if that becomes true, more students will want to make AYP.
ReplyDeleteTeachers and staff have stressed how important AYP is, and some of us listen. But the students who dislike the administration most likely will not care about their arguements toward AYP.
Tell them candy island is in the Field House.
ReplyDeleteit doesnt matter what we say nobody ever takes consideration anyway.! just my honest opinion so i might as well keep my comments to myself.

give us food... we like food lol not school lunch food, like real food.. no one wants to get food poisoning from 12 year old chicken nuggets lol

I think they should give a reward for those who take the MME's on all three days -Ernest Beasley

ReplyDeleteThis school needs to make it sound better. I mean teachers are usually like rude and pushy about things and they really make a big deal out of this test, so personally I think that maybe like if they were a bit nicer about the situation then maybe kids would be more into it. I mean have the wnat to do something does make it better but why bribe kids do something that they have to do to graduate? It makes no sense. I mean if they made it to their junior year then why not do these tests to make it to graduate?
ReplyDelete-Raechel Price
I after the three days that we take mme we should get at least 2 days off meng yang
ReplyDeletePay everyone everyday to go to school cash money no checks
ReplyDeleteNo concern to me as long as I'm able to take a test. I'm not going to stress myself over something that is likely never to happen. And if it does I will be surprised.
ReplyDeleteIf we get 95% of the Juniors to come to school we should let the Juniors have a day off or something. Or after the test we can just go home. I would come to school for 3 days (one of which is suppose to be our day off) if I knew I would just be able to go home after the test, plus we would get our dy off back. We just need to have something to come for. Then you will get most Juniors to come to school for 3 days. But it is really just the Juniors that have been here for a couple years as a Junior, we need to get them to come to take the test too. You just have to bribe us.
ReplyDeleteHey! how about giving us who do come a day off after the test, and bribe us with food. (Class of 2011 is the best)fact not opinion.-Nate Christle
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I don't think there is anything that the school district could do to make kids want to sit in a room for hour upon hour, day after day to answer questions that they probably don't even know the answers to. More often than not, the material that is on the given test has not even been covered in the classroom, yet. So, I don't believe there is anything you could do other than, I don't know...give the kids money? Up front cash, no checks.
ReplyDelete-Myata B
I think we should get new materials for ours school and they should get use new techology for our shool we can be getting handme down stuff from other school......
ReplyDeleteChris lowure
I think we should give the juniors an incentive for them to come. I don't know what that would be but give them a reason to come

i think we should conseder our thinking about the grades and get the graduation on time by keep working because it's very easy to get a good grades but the students should know how the debloma is an importnat thing .....

I think we should get something or give them a 3 days to rest at home if they get 95%. you have to give them a suprise or something that making them to study better for another class that they will be going. We should give the juniors a good day to prapare the MME at home. If they pass, you have to help the Juniors whotever they want but what is good for them that it will bring a good ideals. -Nelson Mandela
ReplyDeleteOk.....making the 11th graders take the MME...and making, in the process, Eastern achieve AYP...
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a hard thing to pull, concidering that the MME takes place in about 2/3 months.
But...one thing we could do is give the 11th graders (that come) a "free day", like a day off, or no work, or free stuff, or even not suspending the ones who do come, but suspend the others for awhile (like say a week or two).
But this really IS "a tough nut to crack"! I (in my own opinion) say that it might not be able to be done considering this issue should've been dealt with awhile back in the school year, and then maybe we could've brought this up.
the people who take the test should get something for taking it. we should get Ice Cream or something.
ReplyDelete~*~Elena Herrera~*~
Maybe we could make AYP if we gave the juniors some type of like day off or prize for birng there! to tell you the truth we should all want to take the test and get to collage but it seems that alot of people dont so i just throw my hands up if we dont make it we dont i guess.
ReplyDeleteJeff-Walker
Getting the juniors to go to all three days of the MME is not going to happen. There are some factors that we just can't control and people are going to miss a day. Now, if there is a way they can make up days of the MME that should be explained so people who miss the first day don't just stop going because there is no point for them to go.
ReplyDelete-Joey Coscarelli
tell them they will get a suprise for doing that and comin all three days or something!! chelsey g
ReplyDeleteIt is our responsibility to come to school on time, taking the MME is a state requirement and its for our own benefit though the school could probably try to give us a day off on the week of exam so we can refresh our minds.
ReplyDelete-Madelaine Pelaez
Although I think that BRIBING students is giving in to their extrinsic wants, but it is a technique that can work. Part of the reason why so many students don't want to come is because they are Juniors when they are supposed to be Seniors, and they feel that they don't need to take it again. Another is that the rest of the school gets a day off while we are in a smelly fieldhouse testing. Most understand the importance of the test, and see that it is a free test, but when we get our days off taken away, the importance leaves the building. At that point, meeting AYP is the last thought on their minds.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we could offer a free breakfast in the morning of the test, for those who come earlier, and a light snack for when they leave to go HOME. After all of that testing, that is honestly all we want to do.
Yuli...
ReplyDeleteExplaining to all students that the MME isn't a way of "torture" for the students; it's actually a way of helping themselves by putting atleast a bit of effort to it. If we get all juniors to take it then we should get some dessert or something♥. To show how "grateful" the teachers are that getting all juniors to take the MME was an accomplishment.lOl =] But we have to face reality that some individuals will just absolutely not take it because they find it totally pointless on their behalf. ya know??
If getting atleast mostttt of the juniors to take it, then that's good enough for me. For those who didn't take it, it's their loss in many ways.
-*Yuli...
BRIBE THE STUDENTS!!!!
ReplyDelete-Amelia A.
Why should u have to bribe students to further their education. thats why if they dont come then we dont need them they are obviously not there becuase they dont care and never will-Billy Hundt
ReplyDeleteBribery is always a good way to get students attention. Free food is always something that people can't seem to refuse. Getting a nice break after the MME is a good way to help too.
ReplyDeleteThere's probably nothing that can guarentee that people are going to come but it's a good place to start.

ReplyDeleteChaunise Leiva
I think the only way to achieve AYP would be to give students some sort or initive or reward to go. If students feel like they arent getting anything out of the MME they simply won't go.
ReplyDelete-Amelia T
we should . just bribe them
ReplyDeletebernade lizaire
Honestly I don't care I'm a senior none of this concerns me anymore
ReplyDelete-Rosalia Juarez-Yuen
I think they should have had a after school group or club that is just dedicated to studying for the test.
ReplyDelete**J.Clark77***
Taking it for free IS a bribe, it IS incentive. They must not understand the concept of 'free'. Hand them fifty dollars before they go in, then take it away when they go out. That makes sense to me, then maybe they'll understand exactly what they just got for free. If they don't really want to understand what 'free' means, it's whatever. The ones smart enough to take it, then let the ones smart enough to show up, take it! That's all the incentive they should need. I didn't take it seriously and I got a thousand dollar grant for it. People don't understand that colleges look at these things. Maybe it's just the senior in me thinking all underclassmen are completely incapable of intelligent though.
ReplyDelete-Justin McKnight
Award them. Pizza maybe after the final day of testing =]
ReplyDelete-Bryonna. T
I think, we need better food. French fries of course. We need like a 1 hour - 2 hour class about what could happen if you dont take the MME. Like the amount of colleges you can't go to. And you won't graduate

ReplyDelete-Adam Cortez 3rd hour.
Sorry. Double post :/
I totally agree with Justin McKnight, let them experience some loss in taking a test that they have to actually PAY for if they don't do well on.
ReplyDeleteum... we could punish them with a charge if they dont go. Make them pay for what they missed out on. Same for tarties, if they are in the hallway, give them a ticket :)

Bribe the students with food but good food not the food the school provide little ceaser sounds about good yum =D... ~DeAnna Mullins
ReplyDeleteAward them if they go.. or threaten them if they don't. :P
ReplyDelete-Jessalyn Gonzales
I think one of the big reasons people don't show up is because one of the test days is on a no school day. No one wants to be at school to take a test while the rest of the school is at home sleeping and eating food. Yes we like food!
ReplyDelete~~Rachel Turner~~
The MME should be on a day that there is school. That way, people who were going to come here anyway still come and have to take the MME, and buses are still running. Teachers should give a day off to kids who took the MME, or MME kids should get to go on a field trip, or something like that. There should be incentive other than a free ACT, because some kids don't understand that that's worth something.

ReplyDeleteSimple, do 2 things.
ReplyDelete1. Do not allow students back in to any of their classes until they take their tests.
2. Work with the court & truancy system to force the kids who just stop going to school because of this to show up.
It may be harsh, but at least it doesn't involve paying all of the test-takers in cash for showing up. (lol)

i think they should get some prizes or at the end have a lil banquet or something.

The juniors that need to take the MME this year, they should be giving free breakast, longer breaks, and possibly gifts for getting there first in line or finishing early.

I think in order to get all Junior’s to take the MME all three days, the administrators could reward them, by giving them a “No Junior School Day” or some Extra Credit in all there classes. – Ryan Gilbert
ReplyDeletea positive thinking and nicer to students and trying to show how much they care not want go get them suspended
ReplyDeleteFarid
Maybe they could do nothing special for the juniors and just tell them to get their butts there. You cant keep rewarding people for what they should already be doing. Juniors should be able to take responsibilty to take the MME. I'm a senior who took the MME last year so i would expect to be rewarded the same as the juniors this year. &I also had a 3.0 or higher my freshmen year so i would like my name at the end of the freshmen hallway. Its ridiculious the administration keeps rewarding students for doing what they should be doing. You cant force students to do something they dont want to.
ReplyDeleteLauren Lindemulder
it's obvious that we should motivate the students to pass there classes and make some effort

ReplyDeleteNot trying to piss anyone off but why should the school have to put more money in to go and reward students for doing whats required in school? LSD is far from made of money && all you juniors who want nicer text books, better bathrooms, better food etc. won't get that for your senior year if they are blowing money to reward you guys for taking a test! I'm sure to you Juniors you think it's not fair that you have to miss out on a day off to take this test. Well guess what? The current seniors did it. Class of 09 and 08 did it. The classes after you will do it. You are not alone. For those of you who are thinking "I'm not going to college." just take it. Later down the road you could change your mind and you will be thankful you took it for FREE at Eastern High School opposed to paying a fee to take it, plus fees to retake it if you don't get the score you need. Plus it affects so many people other than you. Every staff member at Eastern will be affected if you don't take it. No ones saying you have to pass it, just take it all 3 days.
ReplyDeleteFor those who are saying they should give the juniors food, thats not a good idea. When I was a junior, I sure as hell wouldn't of came for food. I have a refrigerator and several resturants around me. Although I'm not for bribing kids to do what they should have to do, I'd agree more with giving them there own day off without being penalized with the warning that they are responsible for the work they miss.
i think you should just bribe them with like $10-30 just for taking it.. it could be cheaper than having a pizza party, and dancing, and games!
ReplyDelete-- Jeremy Vang
all we need to do is bring fries back, and all of ur problems will be solved
ReplyDeleteThe thing I I like about Eastern is that there are many students that have their head on straight on a clear road to their successful future. On the contrary, there are many students that don't. A large sum of freshmen do not go on to their sophomore year, which is very unfortunate. To eliminate this, we need to educate students on what they need to do after high school, because theoretically what we do now effects our admittance into college; Our college effects our future career; our careers effect the rest of our lives. If students fail now, they are only at the beginning of the road of failure.
