Tuesday - Town Hall Meeting II (?)

I've heard quite a few comments about our live town hall meeting we did last week. Some of the comments were from adults who were concerned about negative things that were said, but for the most part the people I've heard from thought it was a very positive event. More than a few of you have suggested we do another one.

That leads to today's question - if we did another town hall meeting what topic, or topics, do you think we should focus on? Who should come to the meeting? Should we try to organize follow up activities that classes can do after watching the event?

Favorite comment from yesterday ... gotta give it to our parent who weighed:

"As a parent, I feel that the diversity, the IB, and the wonderfully talented staff is what drew me to send my child to Eastern as a school of choice. I think that these things should be advertised more.

The negative for me is the disrespect of some of the kids and the lack of choices to remove them from the building. I feel that too much time is spent on approx 15-20 kids in each grade level and that takes away from the kids who want to be at school.

  1. I'm thinking that the topic of town hall meeting 2.0 should include, the new headphone rule [Which I could rant on for hourse] and anything else people feel is needed...

  2. If we do another Town Hall Meeting I think that some teachers should attend as well as students, so that a teacher-student realtions discourse can ensue.

  3. If there is another Town Hall meeting, I think Teachers, Students, and Other members of the community should attend. The meeting should be about the way government spending is being over used. This takes away from schools who really need new supplies and jobs for those who may need them.

  5. I think that another Town Hall meeting would be beneficial to us all. It was a nice way to get the opinions of students heard and acknowledged.

It'd be cool if we could talk about ways to improve our school and its atmosphere.

  12. I'm not sure what another town hall meeting should be about, but I would say another large issue we can reflect on (economy, school system and district, ect.)

I think students, teachers, anyone in the school should be able to attend.

Follow up activities? If every class had their own 'mini' town hall meeting, we wouldn't need a follow up activity. (Good discussions mean much more than journals any day).

  14. Should there be another Town Hall meeting, perhaps it could be an upperclassmen/teacher discussion. We may even through in an administrator. There needs to be a focus on the future of our school. We can complain all we want and moan&groan to our heart's content but what is the point if no one with the power of influence is there to hear? but perhaps we should quit complaining, shift gears and look at not only what Eastern's challenges are, but how we can fix them. Enough with all the talking, we need to get some committees in place and start working on improving our school for generaions to come. Talking about our problems is essential but it is only helpful if we keep ourselves focused and realistic. Let's set goals to be accomplished by a deadline (we seem to work better with those) and see what Eastern Quakers are really made of.

  15. i think if we did do another town hall meeting, the teacher's should do it this time, because, if we mixed both students and teachers, their could be a lot of arguments going around... so split them up, and do sperate town halls.. :D

  18. I think that we should talk about kids that skip class if you're going to skip your classes then why do kids even bother coming to school. There's no point and I think the school staff and parents should attend this next meeting

  19. I think that if both teachers and students come then with their ideas, it would make a better economy for Eastern High School.

  27. if we do another town hall meeting, i think we should have a talk about teh tardy policy, i personally don't like the policy. another is the no passes, headphone during school, and no cells phone before and after school, and during your lunch.

  28. They should talk about the hat rule and the stupid new headphone rule..

  29. I think that would should conduct another one. and if we did I think that students and faculty members should attend to get some insight on what the students think. What I feel we should address is policy because it alot of students seem to have problems from that.

  32. probably what to do with students who disrupt class. should teachers be more harsh towards them? or maybe just send them out more?
also the lack of schedule changes for students who can't stand a teacher and just fail because they can't stand the classit reallly isn't fair to tell a student to go to a class where they know they will argue with the teacher and end up being sent out.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i believe that the topics should be about classes, lunch, and the new policies the school is forcing on the students.
The students should be at the meetings so are side of the story can be heard.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think everyone who can actually make a difference and be heard should go to the meeting and make something happen!

  35. It would be cool if we had another town meeting because more studetns would get the chance to saywhat they truly feel about this school. Staff could also join in if they have something thoughtful to say instead of try to tell us were wrong or just completely ignore our questions all together.

  38. I think it was a good idea and atleast the students were honest about how they feel...But I agree that the next mtg should be opened to students, staff, and parents... To allow them to express their feelings about issues also...
