Wednesday - Listening Project, day 1

Please take a few minutes to reflect on the film, The Listening Project, and respond to the following questions:

1. Of all the places our narrators visited (
China, Canada, India, United Kingdom, Palestine/Israel, Japan, Mexico, Tanzania, South Africa, France, Russia, Brasil, Afghanistan), which one (or ones) made the biggest impression on you? Why?

2. What are some of the main feelings that others have about the US (as portrayed in the film)? Are they justified?

3. Do you think there is anything 'we' should do to address some of the perceptions others have about us?

  2. Palestine/Israel had the largest impact on me. I thought it was interesting how people felt that everything was bigger in America.I think that we can change some of the opinions of people by simply acting a bit less arrogant (according to other people in other countries).

  3. 1. China and Palestine/Israel. The first because I didn't know China was so similar to us. And Palestine/Israel because we always hear of violence between the two countries, but the actual citizens of each country don't hate each other, its terrorists that are a danger to both.

    2. Some people feel that the US is creating jobs, and its a good thing. But they also think we're forcing our culture upon them, and not leaving them alone. Yet, other people think we should focus our aid on those who need help, inside and outside of our own country. Many people compare us to Rome... and think its due time for us o begin our dissent from power.

    3. I think the only way we can change the perceptions of us is by reflecting what we believe through our government policy. If that means we have to annoy our politicians to do it, so be it. Because they don't take the blame for their policies, all of America does. Even though we all focus on our own country, the US has an impact on the world, and we have to realize that.

  4. 1.I would say china, why so is becuase I am around that area and I know exactly where people are coming from when their talking about the the cultural impact that the US has had on people.

2.They basically hate us, they do not want us around them or in their country want so ever. They are justified to a point.

3.Just stop all the hate and violence that is going on.

  5. 1. Of all the places our narrators visited, the one that made the biggest impression on me was Palestine. I was surprised to hear that most Palestinians believe that it is Jewish people who control the U.S. it made me think, "Wow, many Palestinians must really be obsessed with the Jewish."

    2. One of the main feelings that others have about the US is that it is a moving force in the world--that decisions made here not only affect those here, but others around the world. These feelings are justified, I believe, because America, more often than not, those involve itself with the business of other countries. The US is, and wants to be known as, a superpower.

    3. If we want to address some of the perceptions others have, lets start first by changing our attitudes. Lets, as the Canadians said, stop perceiving everything and every foreign person as a threat. That, I think, wouldbe a great start.

  7. Out of all the countries Palestine/Israel made the biggest impression because it surprised me that when you're eighteen and you graduate you have to go into the Army. It also surprised me that they think everything is bigger and more colorful here.
I really don't know what we could do for their perceptions of us. ~Morgan McCoy
