Monday - Eastern's Future

So we're getting a half day today - do you know why? It's so we can spend the afternoon discussing a plan to help transform Eastern next year. A few highlights from the plan so far:

Make each class a little shorter (55 minutes) and add an extra class at the end of the day - Advisory Class. During Advisory we'll so a variety of things - basically provide students with both social and academic support.

Have 17 half days (to make up for the slightly longer day).

Schedule more students into a 7th hour class when they fail a class so they can get back on track to graduate ASAP.

Implement a system of positive behavior supports (teach students how to behave in a civilized manner and reward those who do, re-teach those who don't).

What do you think? What does Eastern need to do to help with our 3 main problems (increase our math and reading scores, increase our graduation rate and create a more positive environment)?

  1. I think the "7th hour" idea is a good idea. that 7th hour will help many students with getting on track, but we really can't do anything for those skippers, that 7th hour gives them another hour to skip. These ideas are good but it's up to the students to get on track.

  2. This plan sounds pretty ALRIGHT.
I wouldn't say it was GREAT though. LOL :)

Just the fact that there will be a longer day..
    Doesn't sound so good.
Many students are already not coming to class.
    Now. Imagine an extra class...

    But then again.
It might help bc it helps them keep up...
    & actually do their work.

I think there should be some sort of vote.
    Something that get students aware.
And decide what they would like to do...

  3. Seventh hour seounds good to me. If a students failing, it'd actually benefit them. They'd be able to catch up. A longer day would let the students get m oer help then they usually do during a normal day. A bad thing would be that the usual skippers and misfits wouldn`t go to class, so it`s one more hour of skipping and committing the perfect crime. Whatever happens, hopefully they ( the students ) use it to their advantage.

  4. Sounds good. A lot of students have many things to do after school with clubs and sports and dont have time to do all of their homework. With this extra class kids can do their homework and not worry about it after school.

  5. i think the 7th hour and the other ways they're looking to change are pretty well set-up. We now just have to get them done. Also the kids that aren't doing s**t, get them out. Im so tired of kids coming to school to walk the halls and just disrupt. They annoying and need to just go and we would all have a better life i am sure of that. But doing whatever possible so kids can graduate on time and learn what they need to graduate is okay with me.

  6. ithink that if it will help people to graduate on time then you should do it. but if the kids goto class on time and do all there work then they should not have to change anything. we know what we need to do. an really people that need to come to class know what they need to do to. they are jsut very lazy an dont care. an i think they should let them not care. we made it this far and no one cared about the other kids that didnt graduate so i think that we shouldnt worry about these kids either. make them go get there GED like all the other ones that didnt make it. i think that we should keep everything how it i sright now and not change anything.

  7. I think the Seventh hour class is a good idea for the students that actually want to use it, but none of this would work for the students that willingly do not participate in school, which, I'm guessing, is the target demographic.

It is they who are bringing this school down as a whole, and others should not make accommodations for those who don't and won't use the resources that we provide.

There has been after school tutoring for ages now, why should we add another class that is essentially, the same thing or in the same category as the tutoring? Maybe change up the name a little bit and they won't know the similarities and actually decide to come.

Hopefully, somehow, we can convince the truant students to come to school with this incentive, otherwise, I don't see any change in the behavior and actions of the current population of failing students that don't care.

  8. This sounds like a good idea, so that people who need help with credits will graduate an wont have to be penalized.

  10. i think that the whole advisory class is a good idea, especially since it doesn't affect me since i'm a senior:) but doing this might finally get the idea to students that they need to improve in their schoolwork, their education. they might not think it's affecting everyone else that they skip class, and fail classes or what not but it really does. i don't know we'll see how this goes(which i will have to find out from my sister)

  11. I think this is a great idea to put students back on track especially those who are juniors and messed up a year in high school. And rewardinq students who follow directions thatz another great idea by if yhu rewardinq one student and another student sees that they might want the same and might change their ways how they act in school.

  12. I think the 7th hour plan would be great. But it depends on if the students are going to use that extra hour successfully. It would hepl alot of failing kids (that acutally care about their grades)catch up

  15. the 7th hr sounds better than the half days, but if i'm graduating, don't really care

  16. make sure all the students are attending class, paying attention and doing their own work.

  17. I think that Eastern should have it where there is a 7th hour JUST for the people who are failing and the people that are doing fine should not have to stay an extra hour at school. I would really hate to stay in school an extra hour...

  18. I don't think it will help. If a kid wants to fail, they will fail, no matter how easy you make the clases. The added school hours upsets me, the failing students don't show up already, all this will accomplish is a punishment of the successful students. The "re-teaching" of students sounds Orwellian and disturbing, "Billy doesn't conform, time for a another reteaching." When do we shart using this as a way to enforce a stricter social conformity? "Obey your high lord administrator, succeed or die! For the greater good of Eastern!"
The incentives sound nice though, just reward the kids that care, in the end what else can you do? Again, if they want to fail they will.

  20. Get everyone into their class and out of the hallway. Involve more math and reading in the lessons. Have consiquences for those whose misbehave and rewards for those that do behave. Make it mandatory for those who are lacking credits to be in the 7th period so they can graduate on time.

  21. Even though the change won't affect me, I think it will be a good idea. it could only help i dont see how it could be a problem in any way.. its not like it'll be a full extra hour added to the day.
but yeah the plan sounds good. hopefully its intentions will be successful too .

  22. I think the 7th hour idea is the best because i failed on credit last year i got 11 our of 12 credits.. and if they come up with a 7th hour it will be easyer fro me to make it up.. better then talking credit recover.

  23. I dont think it's the school's problem. Students need to SUCK IT UP, DEAL WITH THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AND GO TO SCHOOL!!!! They need to deal with it!!! The ONLY reason why we didnt "pass standards" is because people are too lazy to wake up at 7:00 or 7:30 in the morning and GO TO SCHOOL!!!! And they are too soft to deal with the people that are getting under their skin, so they DONT deal with it, and they stay home, or escape it by doing drugs or whatever. And that's my point of view.
