We're into our second week of school now ... so what are some of your early impressions of the new Advisory Class? What's something positive? What's something that needs to improve?

ReplyDeletei feel that as the year progresses the advisory class will prove to be more useful for those who are gonna need to make up work or maybe even get themselves a little bit ahead but for the most part it a pretty cool new thing

ReplyDeleteI thought Advisory was going to be like a study hall. It's teaching me a lot of things I learned in some classes I took in middle school, like Teen Leadership, Mindset, and Making A Difference. I think it could improve on the way it's spent, some of the stuff we've been doing is irrelevant.

ReplyDeleteMy honest opinion is that is seriously a waste of time , because all we do is pointless things. I think we are responsible enough to keep up with are grades. The only good thing is you can work on stuff from another class.
ReplyDeleteI feel that the advisory class is a great way to stay ahead in your classes,and a great way to keep organized. I don't like the planner idea though because I don't like to use them because I feel it doesn't help.

ReplyDeleteWell, advisory is good, i guess. Though, I would really rather the time be used for us to catch up on our school work. Getting to know people can wait til after school. We don't really need a time in our school days for that.
ReplyDeleteMy first impressions of Advisory class was this is different. I'm in an Advisory class for leaders. My class is made up of the student council and students that teachers have suggested to be in this class because I have leadership skills. We work on some different thing then other Advisory classes which is fun. One thing that needs improving on is their needs to be a little more time given for some activates.
ReplyDeleteI like my advisory. Because I'm in student council we all have the same advisory so we can talk and plan stuff almost everyday, instead of having to wait and only talk once a week. Its a great way for me to get things done too.
ReplyDeleteI like my advisory class. Mrs. Bush is really cool and it seems like a good idea. It gives students a chance to do homework so if they have a job after school or are in a club, they won't fall behind in their classes. Something that could be improved is all the IB talk, I mean it's it's leaving no room for making up work for other classes and those of us who are Junior or Seniors already kind of know this stuff especially if we've previously been in IB.
ReplyDeletewhy do we even have Advisory class some people might say so we can get our homework done and not have to do it at home.and some might say so we can chat with our friends. some might want to get there homework done so when your at home all u have to do is if some people have chours they can get that done and then go hang out with there friends and not have to worry about there homework.

ReplyDeleteI love my teacher. She's super nice. But I don't really know any one in that class, so I think that needs to improve. (Not really though.) I like it so far. :D

to me so far my advisory class, i thought was going to be a help. so far the class seems like its a waste, because we dont do nothing in the class, but work sheets about our slefs. to me ithink that we should be able to have it as just a free hour to get extra work done so we dont have so much homework to take home its hard to deal with it all and after school activites.

ReplyDeletei think advisory is really good. it gives me time to get work done for other classes, get homework done, and sometimes sleep. I dont mind the small classes because it's quiet and it allows me to concentrate on work.

ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on advisory are both positive and negative. i partially think it's a waste of time since we don't do much, we just do activities that include more of things we learned in the first week of school with ib, it hasn't really made an impact in my opinion and i know it's meant to get us to be like a community but i find my advisory class kind of awkward and people still remain in their same age group within the class.the only positive thing i would say it's kind of a break before seventh hour but its a waste of 30 minutes added on to the day in my opinion.

ReplyDeleteSo far, I am really enjoying my Advisory class. It helps that I have friends in that class, but in general, it is a very useful class. I think it is a perfect time for previously intrusive things like announcements, voting, and personal organization. Therefore, I think it was a great idea.

ReplyDeleteThe only good thing I got out of Advisory so far was that spectacular booklet with the school year schedule on the inside, Fantastic! I'm sure Advisory is necessary for some kids, but forkids who already keep track of EdLine and their assignments, and do something about it, they don't need that class, and I am among them. Sure, it helps, some more than others.
Advisory should really include more in depth subjects. Maybe a study day every week. -Mike Smith Hour 7
I think that it'll help improve our grades because we have someone to go to and constantly checking our grades. Also its good they mixed up the grade levels cuz we make new friends. The only problem with it i think is that its a very short class and it they talk too much about IB learner profile stuff nobody cares about.
ReplyDeleteI like my advisory but there no alot of people in there that i know. but i still enjoy my Advisory class cuz there alot of fun stuff in there to do. but still advisory won't do much for us because we only have 30-31 minutes of it. i wish its would be alot funny then this. i hope late on the year that we get to do alot stuff then what we are doing now.

I think that the Advisory Class its's really helpful and can help us out alot in class I really like it and think it can be a real help for everyone in eastern high school. It gives them somthing other than classes to do.

ReplyDeleteMy first week went pretty well, I think the original thought behind the advisory classes were a great idea however the execution of them are not so good as they ought to be. First off the original idea as far as I knew was a half an hour period that allowed students a break from actual classes in order to catch up, do homework, etc...however it seems to be more like another class where the obvious is explained and no actual positive effect exists. That said I think it should in fact be altered to be a sort of: Catch up period.

ReplyDeleteAdvisory should be like a studies skills class. We should be able to catch up on work that we are haven't done, or get help on the work that we don't understand. I also think that, it is a good idea for the annoucements and to have the teachers be able to anwer the queations on the things that we aren't to sure about.

last year, how advisory was explained to me, was we had a half a hour to do homework & stuff. Also that they were going to keep on us about our grades, all we've done so far is play irrelavant games. i would like to improve the way the time is spent in that class.-Jordan King

ReplyDeleteAdvisory class is actually a really good idea. I like that it isn't an hour like every other class and it helps you keep your grades up. What I don't like is that you really don't do much of anything in there. I would like it better if it was only for doing homework or work from other classes.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the reason behind advisory class, it brings people together and makes more of a community feeling, however, educationally I'm not sure it teaches anything academically, but the argument to that would be that it teaches life skills of dealing with others. So, I think it's a good class sometimes but not everyday.

They told me that it is just an hour for people to bond so that a lot of the people in this school don't fall behind socially and academically. The problem is, we haven't done any thing related to academics in class yet, and I was wondering when we could actually use the hour to get some work done that we need to.
ReplyDeleteIn theory it sounds good, but it kind of seems like the school board is grasping at straws to try and 'save' the students that skip class or fail because they just don't want to do their work or attend class. Hopefully this approach works though, we need higher progress improvement scores in this school.
MY first impression of advisory class was that it was small. We continue to do these redundant activities rather than just doing my homework. Though i guess some people don't have any homework, so that could be why but still, I want to finish up work so i don't have to do it at home!!!

ReplyDeleteThe advisory class is cool, it lets me interact with kids i didn't even know. Although, we haven't done any of the activities that everyone else is doing! Some teachers follow the syllabus given to them and others just do what they want. That needs to change asap. Other than that, the class is going smoothly...

I still don't completely understand the point though, because I thought it would be a time to make up homework and things like that, but it does not seem that is so. I do like the idea of getting to know a little about each other as a whole class because I don't think we would have achieved that any other way.

ReplyDeletewell, i think its a good idea on the schools part because it gives the students a chance to relax and catch up on some work if needed. Also it gives the students to have sort of a middle man in a way to their councilors so the teacher could help them out if they have questions about their classes.
Well i hate my advisory clas because its mostly freshman. I do however like my teacher a lot. Something that needs to improve is not having the same advisory for the rest of high school!

ReplyDeleteNow, i am starting to realize that this extra hour may actually have some realistic purpose. It allows students a chance to socialize across grades. It provides a break from normal class routine, which is why I think it should be more in the middle instead of before the last hour.
Don't get me wrong--I still think we would not be affected too serioulsly if it was removed--it is deposable.
It would be nice if we had some influence over who our advisory teacher was. Although students would cluster towards many of the same, popular teachers, a better work environment would be promoted.
well i like the advisory class because it lets me get my stuff organized. it lets me get some of my homework done if i have any. it lets me cool down from work and just relax.

ReplyDeleteI really hate advisory. More like my advise I guess, she just has no control over the class. She treats us like we're babies. I think they should get rid of advisory, I like the way classes were last year.
ReplyDeleteI believe, for me, that the advisory hour is a complete waste of my time and educational experience. I do not need the little credit it gives at all. My advisory teachers also have not, so far, given us any time to do our other class work. The teachers have been caught up with trying to control the class and trying to connect with each of us and have us connect with each other. Which for me is useless seeing as my advisory class is 90% freshman... :(

ReplyDeleteAdvisory to me takes up to much time. My advisory class my teacher talks to much and I don't even get to use it for homework time, which is should be used for. Personally it takes to much time out of the day and its not really that useful to me. I would rather just go home and do homework there.

ReplyDeleteMy advisory class is so-so. I like it because I have a nice teacher and she's fun. On the other hand, I don't like it because I don't really know anyone in there. I don't get why they had to mix all the classes together. It'd be better if they just left the freshmen with the rest of the freshmen, sophomores with the sophomores, and so on.

ReplyDeleteMy early impressions of my advisory class were that it's a nice class to clam down in and focus. Something postive is that in my advisory class we have 3 days out of the week to have a study hall. While were studying our advisor calls us up one at a time to disuss how our classes are going and any other issues we have that are going on that we may need help with. Something to imporve would be to maybe have a longer time period for advisory.
ReplyDeleteAdivsory is going pretty darn well in my opinion. I think its a good idea just to keep students on track in their classes. I think that other students don't understand the concept of the class. They think that it's actually to do other class work and think its a "study hall". But its not. So, they're annoyed with the whole thing in general. Also I believe that they're not being open minded about it. But as far as my advisory class goes, its pretty great :)

But we barley do any work in that class , i think we should still keep it like last year. I don't mind having a 7'th hour class , I do think it is kinda useful because we focus on our grades and do progress reports so we don't slack up on school .

ReplyDeleteI really like my advisory class. When I first found out that we were having an advisory class I thought that we were going to get to work on our homework. But instead of doing just our homework we also do activities together which I think is cheesy. I think in the coming weeks though we will be able to get more independent work time, so that we aren't wasting 30 minutes on activites.
ReplyDeleteAdvisory is a great opportunity for students to get back on track when they start slipping. When students are made to look at their grades it makes them want to improve them. I know for me if I see my gades and I Have a D I will do everything possible to get it up to an A or B. Advisory also helps up build relationships not only with the teacher but with out peers. We do a ton of group work and learning skills that we need in our everyday lives.

ReplyDeleteAdvisory class is a simple concept but i dont know how effective it is going to turn out in the long people keep intrest and how long both staff and students put effort in this class but it could help people sucessfully get out of school time pressure and take away some of the many things that can hold us students back.i dont know for me its just unneeded down time when i could just have extra time off its what ever though.

I like my advisory. It's pretty fun, I have my little brother in my class, but there's only one other senior in my class the reast are either sophmores or freshman. Improvement that needs to be done is more "study hall" like being able to do some other work from youre other classes. My advisory is also awesome because we get to socialize to get to know one another better and have just random discussions of our interest :) the class is too short though.
