Thursday - Dealing With Mean People

Check out this article from CNN - How to deal with mean people ... do you think we have a problem with civility (people treating each other with dignity and respect) here at Eastern? If so, where do you see people acting mean the most .. hallways, class, bathrooms, cafeteria, ..?

How do you usually respond to a Mean Person (or do you sometimes act like the mean person)?

  3. I think we do in fact have an issue with mean people here at Eastern, and it's especially apparent between students and students and teachers. People simply need to take the initiative to be humble and handle such individuals with grace. If someone is mean, they won't see that if you're being rude as well because they see a reflection of themselves, not the opposite. If not properly handled, then the issue will become far more complex than when it started.

There is no proper way to deal with "mean people" (not including bare knuckle fist fights in a saloon) and many people tell you that it is best to ignore this behavior. However indifference as a defense mechanism does not always yield effective results. I for example, upon being wronged, challenge the other party to a duel. swords and jousting work quite well for petty matters, but pistols at dawn creates a much more dramatic confrontation. My point being, just do well to others and hope karma picks up the tab.

  8. To deal with it, all you can do is: Maintain a positive boundary, Disarm their negativity, even if just for now, Resist the urge to judge or assume, and/or Act instead of just reacting.

  9. My mom always told me to kill them with kindness, but really the only thing that will be dying is you. All bullies want is attention and if you give them any attention, they'll just reply negatively and it'll turn into a big mess. The only way is to ignore this behavior. Obviously if they are being 'mean' to everyone, then they feel they don't want help, and 'you can bring a horse to the water but you can't make it drink it', amen?

if you wanna be treated good then you should treat others good... If you wanna be treated bad then others will treat you baldy... there days for both, but you should really try to treat every one with respect and good... No matter what ..
