Advisory, to move or not to move ...

Advisory classes, please post where you stand on the question of should we move Advisory to 1st hour next year. Please post a brief summary statement to explain your position. Come back on Wednesday and spend a few minutes reading what other classes said.

Thank you!

  4. Mr. Ejoh'S Advisory Class.
The consensus in this class is that Advisory should remain in the 6th period.

  5. We had a pretty even split in Dr. Bell's with pros and cons---1st are people too tired and sleep or does it give you time to wake up. 1st hour people are here, but 6th hour many seniors and others are gone after 3rd hour. Pros for 6th---It's a stress reliever, a time to get homework done and catch up on work.

  6. We voted in our advisry class and we spilt the votes 7 to 5. Most of the students thought that having adivory in the morning would be more useful than having it 6'th hour. Some Pro's the class listed would be Getting homework done and extra work. But a Con to it would be more kids not coming in the morning and kids falling asleep.

  7. Ms. Hency's Advisory Class.
The consensus in this class is that Advisory should stay as 6th hour. If it is changed most of the students feel that no one would attend.

  8. Mr. Richter's Advisory reached consensus on keeping Advisory where it is - 6th hour. However, we were not that strong in our opinion. Basically, if the school decides to move it to 1st - we'll roll with it.

We just want more fresh Friday's!

  9. We came to no concensus. Half wanted it moved, half wanted it to stay the same, and half didn't care. The other half thought we should concentrate on our fractions.

  10. From Mr. Jason's advisory... 14 to 4 we decided to keep it as is in 6th period. Some students like having it in tandem with C lunch, it is viewed as a break from academic stresses in the afternoon, a way to get homework from past hours and for 7th hour done (Kaila), and Tarik likes it, and Kaila likes her Advisory teacher. :-) Now what!?!?

  11. Most students would prefer to move advisory to 1st hour because they like the idea of time to finish homework in the morning. They said it would be nice to come in and have the time to get organized and settled in for the day.

A vocal minority likes 6th hour because it breaks the day up, and provides time to finish work assigned in earlier hours.

  12. Ms. Brady's advisory class voted on advisory staying where it is - 6th hour. Their reasoning was that people would not attend if it was 1st hour, and that most people would just sleep through it.

  13. From Perez's advisory: a vote of 14-2 to keep it 6th hour. Best reasons: needed break late in the day, like the "routine" as it is, feel they would be less likely to actually do things in advisory if it was 1st hour (like work on personal project)

  14. Rose's Advisory voted (although it was close) to change Advisory to 1st hour - the main reasons were: so that students could complete homework from the previous day, hear announcements before school started, and so they can feel organized for the remainder ot the day.

  15. Petroff - remain the same 6th hour

  16. Salais voted 5 to 13 in favor of keeping 6th hour.

    STUDENT Reasons -- NOT MINE:
too many students would be late
6th hour is like a break at the end of the day
more convient 6th hour and students have more energy to participate

  17. My advisory also voted for 6th hour overwhelmingly.

  18. Ms. Turner's Awesome Advisory! Woot!Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 3:14:00 PM EDT

Our Advisory was much more in favor of 6th hour because it is something to look forward to toward the end of the day and a chance to work on homework before leaving school. We also want to mention that a "flex" day each week would REALLY be beneficial so students can sign up to work with other teachers on schoolwork or their mentors for their personal projects. A couple liked 1st hour, but most of the class thought kids wouldn't come to Advisory if it was the first part of the day.

  19. Out of 18 students, 16 chose 6th hour over 1st hour advisory.

Some students said it would be nice to have a jump start to the day with advisory but some admitted that many would perceive school as starting a half hour later than this year and would adjust with the same problems we are currently facing in first hour. In other words, current students that show up 20 minutes late would start adjusting by coming to school 50 minutes late.

  20. Demorest's Advisory wants first hour!

  21. My advisory voted: 6 for 6th, 8 for 1st, 5 didn't vote. Same reasons as others.

  22. Hello everyone!

My advisory voted to move the class to 1st hour by a narrow margin of 1 vote!

  23. Most votes for 1st hour, only 2 votes for 6th

  24. Wright's Adisory voted 4 to 14 to keep 6th hour.

STUDENTS: many said they would just sleep in and skip Advisory and if they were in Advisory 1st period they'd be sleepy and so wouldn't participate in it as much.

  25. My Advisory voted for 6th Hour by one vote.
Many good reasons for 1st or 6th - the students who come on time & participate will continue & it would be nice to have consistency.

  26. Students preferred 1st hour
    rationale:
get "homework" done that wasn't finished (or was never taken home in the first place)
    be "more prepared" (huh?!)
do "homework" at school (not at home)
students more willing to participate (again...'huh?!')
try to wake up for core classes (sigh!)
tardies wont affect grade (stated from someone who forgot attendance/participation is part of advisory grade)
    more students will probably attend
more on task because it is not the end of the day
    "relax" before day starts (hmm)
